English may sound very different from French and German, but in actuality, the three languages share many words. This isn’t only the result of the word borrowing common to modern languages. French, German and Latin played direct, pivotal roles in English’s early evolutionary stages. As a result, a large part of English vocabulary is derived from these languages. Further, English’s multilingual heritage has produced a language that is founded on the heavy use of foreign words and phrases from the past and present. Much to the chagrin of French and German speakers, this tends to make speaking and writing English more difficult, not less.
